Nice post in Huffington: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/02/science-religion-creationism-antiscience_n_1933316.html.

I posted a comment:

Dear Kyle:

Definitely a step in the right direction, and yes, many people do find it a turnoff when you call them "not good" or "stupid".

But is the root cause of the problem the religious worldview of "an ideologically entrenched audience"? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that the root cause is the "ideological entrenched" views of those doing the presentation of the scientific facts?

What I'm getting at is that the religious audience (which, by the way, is increasingly rejecting evolution according to recent poling) is simultaneously presented both with a set of scientific facts - the historical trajectory of evolution, the success of DNA descriptions of biological life - AND a cosmological/evolutionary worldview which, while inspired by evolution, is NOT scientific. To boot, this cosmological/evolutionary worldview is often rabidly anti-religious, thus the frequent tossing out of the "not good" and "stupid" labels.

So, yes, I agree that is a mistake for people not to grasp the scientific facts. But, when the scientific facts are mixed in with an anti-religious worldview that claims evolution as its proof, we shouldn't be surprised when the facts are mistaken for the worldview and rejected.

So, what to do? Yes, emphasize where there is agreement. But also, lets understand the take-no-prisoners cosmological/evolutionary worldview as well.

Scientist! Know yourself.
