Science and Religion: Writings by William Hatcher

Introduction

William S. Hatcher, a Baha’i and professor of mathematics, was a prolific writer on intellectual aspects of the Baha’i Faith.  He wrote a series of four influential articles, the first appearing in 1969, that offered a forceful set of arguments – based on the Baha’i writings – for the unity of science and religion.  He placed a strong emphasize on recognizing and acting on that unity to effectively address world problems.

Scientific Proof of the Existence of God

In A Scientific Proof of the Existence of God, published in the Journal of Bahá’í Studies Vol. 5, number 4 (1994), Hatcher proposes a proof of the existence of God. Arguing that evolution show that the existence of unseen forces that bring about the creation of human being, he writes that it “seems reasonable to call this force ‘God,’ but anyone uncomfortable with that name can simply call it ‘the evolutionary force’ (or, more precisely, ‘the force that produced evolution and thus produced the human being’)”.
